Here's a great review of our record release show for L.R.S. Records - Spring Sampler 2020 by John Tierney. This recording was produced before the pandemic and then put on hold until 2021.

'....Next up was Underwater Bosses playing a set of Surf Rock songs that FINALLY brought the crowd to the dance floor. The Bosses play a style that honors the great players of the past and they do it with perfect reverence and love. Wearing their influences on their sleeves, influences like Dick Dale, Link Wray, The Chantays as well as current keepers of the Surf Rock flame like Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet. To close out the set the Bosses brought back Christopher Nolan from the Action to guest on trumpet which brought the house down with a sound that at times harkened back to Morricone with his soundtrack work on the Spaghetti Westerns of the 70’s. Tremendous players.'

Underwater Bosses first show of 2021 at The Montage Music Hall was a success! It’s been over a year since we’ve played live thanks to crappy Covid, but we are back and it feels so good! Thanks to everyone who came out for the show and big thanks to Erik (Viking Guitar) and Brenna for buying a record and capturing some sweet video footage! It’s wonderful to see people having fun and enjoying life again!

Well it's been a bit. The covid-19 pandemic put a damper on all of our plans for the year. We had to cancel shows in Albany, Rochester, New York City, Toronto and our anticipated first annual Surf Rock Fest in Syracuse. As well as many others. It's been rough on all of our friends and family. And especially those in the music and entertainment business.

While we've been in quarantine we managed to write a lot of music. And record quite a bit. We're happy to announce our Halloween - Horror Surf digital EP "The Legness Monster / Grabbed by the Ghoulies". Enjoy these bone chilling songs recorded, mixed and mastered by Underwater Bosses now available at Bandcamp, iTunes, Spotify, Amazon Music, Google Play, SoundCloud, Tidal and Deezer.

The Legness Monster is the legend of a pair of disembodied legs that have been known to prowl the dark waters of the mighty Oswegatchie river. Legend has it that once you've seen the legs, it's too late. There are no known survivors. But the legend lives on.

Grabbed by the Ghoulies is the classic tale of the unknown that lurks underneath your bed. The stuff that nightmares are made of.

We'd like to give a huge thanks to Alan Taylor at Pipeline Magazine for the rad review of 'Aqua La Vista' in Issue 113 - Winter 2019.

Drummer Bob Breen, guitarist Chris Stewart and bassist Greg Bresett have all collaborated on numerous previous musical projects but got together last year to play surf rock. Theirs is a riff-driven style and Ride of the Surfers Ride is certainly a bashing, crashing scene-setter with pounding drums, pumping bass, a catchy hook-laden lead and some deep whammy-twanging notes. This mighty arrangement distinguishes it from its companions and it does stand out as the lead track. Between the Black Sea and Me is a relentless medium-pacer with some grinding twang guitar to recommend it. Elsewhere it’s more in-your-face as the riff rules the waves, which please any head-banging surfers or furious foot-tappers out there.

A huge thank you to TJ Drucker at NYS Music for the incredible review.

Hearing Aide: Underwater Bosses ‘Aqua La Vista’

The Great Lakes are the biggest lake system on Earth with a total shoreline of 10,900 miles, more than the East and West US coasts combined. It should come as no surprise that Syracuse is home to a burgeoning Surf Rock scene and the birthplace of Underwater Bosses. These guys have been playing together in numerous projects for over 2 decades, but finally formed this band last September. Their debut album, Aqua La Vista, was released in April and consists of 12 original tracks that perfectly capture the spirit of the sport, that made the genre famous.

“Ride of the Surfers Ride” opens the album with everything you’d hope for in a surf rock song. Wet, arching guitar riffs, head bobbing drum beats and a bass line to boogie to. “Basshead” takes that and turns it up even higher, all while adding a salty organ to the mix. This is the kind album you play in your car on a sunny day with the windows down. In fact, it was the “Between the Black Sea and Me” that made me get into my car to take a drive in order to fully appreciate the sound and style of this album.

“Red Tide” is a prime example of how this band’s sound can make their music feel oceanic in size. This song itself is a powerhouse; large from the get-go like the algae blooms it’s named after. This band continues to encapsulate the feeling of surfing with a sound that swells in and out like the sea itself. “KGB Tsunami,” my favorite instrumental surf track on the album, has a super catchy guitar riff and Chris Stewart really lets his inner Dick Dale shine as he makes you feel like James Bond is catching waves. Bob Breen’s intense drumming can’t be highlighted by a single track but “Surfin Hand” really showcases his talent. The same can be said for Greg Bresett on bass, who obviously shines on “Basshead” but really kicks it up on “Heavy the Ride.”

This album also consists of two vocal surf tracks and the really hold their own amongst the instrumental surf tracks. “Turtle Neck Sweater Zombies” is infinitely catchy and fits nicely in the first half of the album. However, “Surfin Lullaby” is the most unique song on this album and also the most beautiful. It shines a lovely light on how great this band is and would be a lovely cap to the album, but a better one is certainly the last full track, “Surftacular”. It’s just one last all-out surf fest until the end. While this album is a must-listen for any fan of the surf rock genre, I would absolutely recommend it to anyone looking for a fast, fun and frenetic sound.

Check out this awesome review of our album “Aqua La Vista”. A great big THANK YOU to Slams Review and Shakin Katz Radio for the kind words!

In one form or another Underwater Bosses have been kickin' around upper New York state for a few years. Most notably as The Beard and Surfer R Cool. In late 2018 they became Underwater Bosses and things started to break. They recorded their debut album earlier this year and Sharawaji Records quickly signed them up and for good reason. That debut album "Aqua La Vista" is one killer and stout release. This puppy punches the clock in with 12 original tracks of surf rock/surf punk. Hell, they even throw in a couple of tracks with vocals and a little math rock, just to keep you on your toes. This is aggressive surf that doesn't overload you and comes off as robust and refreshing. Highlights include: "Basshead", "Surftacular", "Ride Of The Surfer's Ride", "Surfin' Hand" and "KGB Tsunami".

Over all this is a one impressive debut album and one that you should snag up. It will have you hitting the repeat button on a regular basis, so what more do you want? Highly recommended!!

Surf Jam kicks off Saturday

The Can-Am Surf Rock Jam featuring seven surf rock artists from all over the U.S. and Canada, might be the Seaway Festival event working hardest to stick to this year’s theme of Surfin’ the St. Lawrence.

The Surf Rock Jam was organized by Greg S. Bresett, a member of the Seaway Planning Committee.

Many of the bands featured in the jam share the same record label Sharawaji Records which helped Mr. Bresett, who plays in one of the bands, put the show together.

“A lot of people are excited for something different,” Mr. Bresett said. “Hopefully it is something that sticks and we can do this every year at the Seaway Festival.”

Mr. Bresett said the music will appeal to a many people.

“If anybody likes anything from the 50s they’re automatically in and it’s instrumental so there is no one shouting in your face. It’s pretty mellow most of the time, but it’s upbeat at the same time. So, you can reach all audiences.”

The Surf Rock Jam at Phoenix on the Bay patio, overlooking the St. Lawrence River kicks off at 3 p.m. Saturday and runs until 9 p.m. there is a $5 entry fee.

Underwater Bosses song KGB Tsunami is featured on Monster Kid Radio #415 - Planeta Bur (and others) with Stephen D. Sullivan.

Friend of the show Stephen D. Sullivan returns to Monster Kid Radio this week, and he's bringing three movies with him . . . sort of. Steve and Derek start their discussion with the 1962 Soviet science fiction film Planeta bur (dir. Pavel Klushantsev). This film leads into 1965's Voyage to the Prehistoric Planet (dir. Curtis Harrington), which then leads into and 1968's Voyage to the Planet of Prehistoric Women (dir. Peter Bogdanovich). Just how this works is something Steve and Derek tackle in this episode. Also we have some of your favorite segments - Professor Frenzy's Bedtime Stories, Kenny's Look at Famous Monsters of Filmland, and Dr. Tongue's World of Monster Collectibles. (And special thanks to Chérie "Rhuby" Gallinati and Mark Haider for their work on the Monster Hunter for Hire promo!)
